Introduction
The Shahin is an artillery rocket system of Iranian origin. It was developed to provide large amounts of destructive power at medium ranges and at a low cost. The Shahin has been replaced in production by more capable artillery rocket systems, but remains in active use.
Layout
The Shahin is a conventional artillery rocket that follows a ballistic trajectory. The rocket has a long cylindrical body with a cone shaped nose and four fixed wings at the end. The Shahin uses solid propellant and has seven nozzles. The longer range Shahin-2 has a longer body that holds more propellant, but is similar in any other way. The Shahin is launched from a simple triple rail launcher with the missiles seated on top of the launch rail. In Sudanese service the three launch rails are mounted on an Italian Iveco 210-32 truck or its South African license production SAMIL-100 equivalent.
Firepower
The Shahin carries a large 190 kg high explosive warhead. The Shahin-1 has a range of 13 km and the longer range Shahin-2 reaches as far as 20 km. Reloading a launch rail takes several minutes. The accuracy is stated to be limited.
Protection
The Shahin is an unarmored system that is vulnerable to any kind of weapon. Therefore the Shahin must be used as a stand-off weapon and operated behind the frontline. The triple rail launch trailer is towed by a standard truck and the SAMIL-100 launch vehicle in Sudanese service is unarmored as well.
Mobility
The Shahin is a reasonably mobile system since it is not as large and heavy as several other Iranian artillery rocket systems. Its mobility is similar to other truck and trailer combinations.
Users
The Shahin has been acquired in large quantities by Iran and is in use with the army and revolutionary guard. The Shahin has been replaced in production by more capable artillery rocket systems, but remains in active Iranian use. For many years it was thought that the Shahin was never exported but recent videos have indicated that the Shahin-2 is in active use with Sudanese forces and has been used in recent conflicts.
Shahin
The Shahin artillery rocket system consists of large but rather simple rockets and a basic three rail trailer mounted launcher. The Shahin-1 is the original missile with a 13 km range. The improved Shahin-2 is similar in any way but features a longer body that hold more propellant, which results in a longer 20 km range. The Shahin-1 and 2 can be launched from the same launch rails.
